Summit Communications Gears Up for Bangladesh Mobile Data Explosion With Juniper Networks

Transmission Network Operator Deploys Juniper Networks ACX Series for Mobile Backhaul

DHAKA, BANGLADESH -- (Marketwired) -- 12/03/13 -- Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced that Summit Communications Ltd. -- one of Bangladesh's two nationwide transmission network service providers -- has deployed a seamless access-to-core network solution. This has enabled Summit Communications to radically simplify its network while providing the scalability to accommodate massive growth in mobile data traffic following the issuance of the country's first commercial 3G mobile network licenses.

Summit Communications currently provides transmission and mobile backhaul services to all of Bangladesh's major Internet service providers, mobile operators, WiMAX operators, cable TV operators and a few government agencies. The successful completion of a radio spectrum auction in September has resulted in the country having four new 3G mobile service providers in addition to state-owned Teletalk, which launched a 3G service last year on a trial basis.

There are some 109 million mobile phone users among Bangladesh's population of more than 160 million but it lacks Internet services, with barely 36,000 subscribers by either mobile or fixed lines. The customer transition to 3G handsets and networks is, therefore, expected to result in a massive increase in data traffic over Summit Communications' network. Faced with this prospect, Summit Communications needed to scale mobile backhaul capacity to support the five mobile operators, who have more than 20,000 base station sites between them. At the same time, it wanted to transition away from SDH-based legacy transports to an end-to-end network based on a single architecture that would support new revenue-generating services.

News Highlights

  • The Juniper Networks solution, implemented by leading systems integrator AGC Networks, has enabled Summit Communications to radically simplify its network to not only accommodate an exponential increase in users over its network but also pave the way for new services aimed at enterprise market as well as the small and medium sized businesses.
  • Summit Communications is now able to provide backhaul connectivity over a seamless Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network that extends all the way from the point of customer access to the core.
  • The access layer of Summit Communications' new network is provided by Juniper Networks® ACX Series Universal Access Routers, a family of hardened devices equipped with interfaces for both time-division multiplexing (TDM) and Ethernet (high density Gigabit Ethernet, power-over-Ethernet, and 10GbE), with built-in end-to-end network monitoring, as well as support for high precision clocking and synchronization, which is critical to mobile operators.
  • The company has also deployed Juniper Networks SDN-ready MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers in its aggregation, edge and core network layers, establishing an agile, operationally efficient end-to-end network with high performance and investment protecting scale. The MX Series 3D portfolio automates complex operations and service delivery; scales bandwidth, subscribers and services; and allows users or operators to efficiently create services that monetize the network, which could result in rapid return on investment and lower total cost of ownership.

Summit Communications
"Deployment of this new end-to-end IP/MPLS network is a strategic initiative for the company. To date, the lion's share of traffic running across our network has been voice but with the roll-out of the new 3G mobile services Bangladesh's Internet revolution is starting in earnest and we are now well prepared for the data deluge. With Juniper Networks' solution we are benefiting from what you might call 'last-mover advantage' and leveraging technology that was simply not available going back a year or so. The network architecture we have in place now should enable us to accommodate not just 3G but also 4G/LTE when it comes to Bangladesh, as well as allowing us to offer new business Internet services."
-Md. Arif Al Islam, CEO & MD, Summit Communications

Juniper Networks
"Summit Communications is now on the leading edge in terms of transmission networks with an infrastructure that can accommodate many different types of traffic and connect different generations of mobile service provider equipment from a single access point. Having seamless MPLS and a single control plane, running under a single network operating system, makes a huge difference in terms of operational simplicity, scalability and the financial viability of new service offerings."
- Ravi Chauhan, managing director, India and SAARC, Juniper Networks
