Japanese Online Entertainment and Media Group Revving Up Content Innovation With Juniper Networks Data Center Solution

TOKYO, JAPAN -- (Marketwired) -- 02/03/16 -- Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced that Japan's leading social networking service and smartphone gaming provider mixi, Inc. (TSE: 2121) has selected Juniper Networks to implement their data center solution utilizing Juniper Networks® QFX5100 Ethernet Switches to support MPLS/VRF in conjunction with Juniper Networks MX480 3D Universal Edge Routers and EX Series switches to help eliminate critical operational bottlenecks. As a result, mixi can now seamlessly and dynamically move workloads between in-house and outsourced cloud data centers, improving customer experience and boosting developer productivity.

Over the last two years, mixi has experienced explosive revenue and traffic growth due in large part to the success of Monster Strike, a smartphone app that has built a customer base of more than 30 million national and international players since its launch in October 2013. The company has a culture of proactive service development and recently formed XFLAG™ STUDIO to provide a dedicated focus on gaming and video content development for its entertainment division.

News Highlights

  • To support service development and delivery, mixi leverages a range of cloud providers as well as resources within its own data centers. With its 'cloud first' approach, new services are developed and delivered from the public cloud, and as they gain widespread market adoption, migrate to an on-premises system that offers greater capacity and availability. While this provides mixi with considerable resourcing flexibility, a downside was the burden of dealing with IP address duplication issues and complex access control list (ACL) management.
  • The company addressed these problems by leveraging multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) with virtual routing and forwarding (VRF) technology; this solution features mature technology and stable operation with minimal network overhead. By deploying Juniper Networks QFX5100 Ethernet Switches to support MPLS/VRF in conjunction with Juniper Networks MX480 3D Universal Edge Routers and EX Series switches, mixi realized its vision of a seamless connection with cloud environments and secure multi-tenancy through routing table segmentation.
  • Streamlined network management using Juniper Networks Junos® software across both platforms was a major factor in mixi's choice of service provider. Junos has greatly simplified previously complex operational tasks, such as the assignment of new routes to ACLs.

Supporting Quotes

"When we compared cloud data center systems from other companies, we felt that the Juniper Networks configuration management solution was much simpler, reducing both man-hours and risk. The biggest advantage of the Juniper Networks solution is that it enables us to provision cloud service delivery environments without complex network configuration. This is a major benefit in terms of ease of deployment and man-hours to both staff members responsible for services and to IT managers like myself."
-Junpei Yoshino, senior network engineer,XFLAG™ STUDIO, mixi Inc.

"mixi operates in an incredibly vibrant and dynamic space, which can be a challenge to ensure a flexible operating environment to keep up with changes in service demand. Our MPLS/VFR solution makes it much easier for mixi to juggle workloads between their own data centers and cloud service providers, enabling agility and adaptation to new trends."
